In 1898, Louis Renault built his first car, a year later he and his brothers founded a company to build them professionally. They soon started building commercial vehicles as well. In 1955, the commercial vehicle division of the company merged with Latil and Somua to form SAVIEM. When truck manufacturers Berliet and Saviem merged in the 1970s, they continued under the name of the parent company: Renault. In the early 1980s, Mack was bought in the USA. Around 2000, Renault held a major sale. The tractor division went to Claas, the buses to Irisbus (now IVECO) and the trucks became a fully-fledged Volvo subsidiary. The advantage of this is that the trucks meet the same quality and safety requirements as those of the Swedish parent company. Of course, a lot of technical development is done together, but the cabins continue to be developed by Renault itself. With success: the cabin of the D-series (once developed for the Midlum) is also used by various other manufacturers, such as Volvo (FL, FE and VM), DAF (LF and XB), Tatra (T810), Rába, Peecon, Mol, Emoss, Thomas, Kenworth, Peterbilt and of course Mack. In addition to the D-series, Renault also has the heavy T-series, rugged K-series and for construction the C-series in its program in 2025.
Renault has been named Truck of the Year several times, the last time in 2015 with the T-series, but also in 1991 (the legendary Renault AE Magnum) and in 1983 (with the G-series) the coveted statuette went to France.
