On April 1, 1928, Hub and Wim van Doorne founded their company, initially operating from the blacksmith shop of a brewery in Eindhoven. Fun fact: this building now houses the DAF Museum. The company was named Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagen Fabriek (Van Doorne’s Trailer Factory), but from day one, they built much more than just trailers and semi-trailers. During the post-World War II reconstruction period, DAF began manufacturing trucks and buses, with large military orders quickly establishing the company in this field. The DAF 2600 marked the brand’s first international success. In the late 1980s, the DAF 95 was introduced. The cabin of this truck was developed in collaboration with Pegaso, with a strong focus on driver preferences. This cabin has undergone several facelifts, and the latest version is still in production today, including in factories in Taiwan and Brazil.
In 1986, DAF acquired the British commercial vehicle giant Leyland. To this day, the Leyland factory produces light truck models for the global market. In 1996, DAF itself was acquired by Paccar, making it a sister brand of Kenworth and Peterbilt. Many companies use DAF components, with DAF and Paccar engines found not only in trucks and buses but also in agricultural vehicles, construction machinery, cranes, and boats.
In 2021, DAF introduced a completely new range: the new XF, XG, and XG+. The latter features the largest cabin on the market, allowing DAF to capitalize on the latest European regulations. Later, the medium-duty DAF XD and the light-duty DAF XB followed. In 2024, the entire lineup received a major technical update and a minor visual facelift, ensuring that DAF remains competitive for years to come—if not ahead of the competition.
